Can cinnamon help you to lose weight?

Our nose delights in the scent of cinnamon and it is no wonder, the thermogenic herb warms the body and those in cold climates have known this for centuries. Cinnamon has some active component in it that are great for our health. Read on to discover the health benefits of cinnamon and how cinnamon can actually help you lose weight.

Cinnamon has been a trade commodity between the East and Europe since trade routes opened up to allow commerce. The bark of the cinnamon tree is the part of the plant that is used. The bark is either curled into a cinnamon stick or ground into a powder, which most of us are familiar with. The active components of cinnamon are cinnamyl acetate, cinnamyl alcohol from the essential oils and cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamon is an excellent source of manganese, a trace mineral our bodies need. Cinnamon is also a source of calcium and iron.

Scientific Research Shows Cinnamon Balances Sugar Levels

Medical trials at several medical university test sites concluded that the patients that digested a quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon per day experienced a leveling of their blood sugar levels and when these same patients stopped the intake of cinnamon in their meal plans, the blood sugar levels rose up again.

The properties of the effective compounds in cinnamon enable our bodies to restore blood sugar levels to normal. If the sugar level goes too high, cinnamon will lower the sugar level until the normal balance is achieved. If sugar drops too quickly, cinnamon works to slow the metabolism in order to stop the body from burning sugar too fast.

These spikes in sugar or glucose levels in the body are dangerous and can cause permanent damage to organs and tissues. Cinnamon helps keep your body’s internal furnace burning at a nice smooth rate so your body is better able to use the sugars it needs to be healthy.  Cinnamon is not the cure for diabetes, but it sure goes a long way in slowing the side effects of the disease.
